Sölden
Made famous in recent years as the dramatic filming location for James Bond, Spectre, Sölden has firmly stepped into the spotlight, yet it still remains one of the Austrian Alps’ most underrated ski destinations. Located just 1 hour 15 minutes from Innsbruck, it is an exceptionally convenient choice for a long weekend or shorter ski break. The setting itself is striking, framed by rugged peaks and expansive glacier views that give the resort a highalpine, dramatic feel.
While the ski area may not rival the vast scale of destinations such as the Arlberg, its 148km of pistes provide more than enough variety for a full week on the mountain. The terrain caters well to confident intermediates in particular, with wide, cruising reds and long descents, while beginners and advanced skiers are equally well served. The lift system is modern, efficient and impressively well connected, making it easy for all skiers to explore the terrain smoothly and with minimal waiting time.
Snow reliability is one of Sölden’s great strengths. With access to not one but two high altitude glaciers, the resort enjoys one of the longest seasons in Austria, and you can expect excellent conditions from early winter right through to late spring.
The après ski in Sölden is a real highlight, lively enough to rival the likes of St Anton and Ischgl, yet with its own distinctive character. A typical après afternoon begins on the mountain at Gigijoch, where the atmosphere quickly builds, before the party flows down into the village, with a string of energetic bars lining the resort’s central high street.
Away from the slopes, Sölden offers far more than skiing alone. There is an ice rink in the heart of the village, an ice climbing experience, which is a particularly unique addition, and a range of alternative winter activities from traditional sleigh rides to indulgent spa afternoons.
While its name may not yet carry the same weight as St Anton, Lech or some of the larger French resorts, Sölden is a destination not to be overlooked. For those seeking a classically Austrian luxury ski holiday with superb snow, vibrant après and excellent accessibility, it deserves a place high on your list.
